How Rog can help you get more out of Akiva's WebBoard, or provide other data massaging services on WinTel machines

I can offer you a wide variety of services related to Akiva's WebBoard 4-6, as well as generic "data massaging" on WinTel systems.  (I also know Unix, and write a lot of C/C++, although this is a closely-gaurded secret!)

This page tells you something about who I am, lists the services I can offer, and provides you with contact information, and client references.

If you think you'd like to ask me for a bid, please read section 5 first.

If you have a question, please e-mail me (obviously, the "NOSPAM_" portion is to be removed), or go to my Yahoo group at:

1:  Who I am

Everyone calls me "Rog" or "Roger," but if you really need to know, my legal name is "Raj Seshu."  (You might think that my appearance suggests that I'm a "nerd," AKA a "geek."  Quite correct.)

I have a B.A. from the U. of Chicago in Mathematics, a J.D. from UCLA, and am "all but doctoral dissertation" in C.S. from U. Ill. (Champaign).  I've worked as a computer programmer and software consultant since 1979, on a wide variety of platforms and projects . . . everything from knowledge-based systems written in LISP (various Unix platforms), to insurance processing (IBM mainframes), and retail/distribution (PCs and minis).  I've been a faculty member in the Math/C.S. dep't at the University of Denver.  (I've also loaded trucks, sold real estate, flipped burgers, worked at an immigration clinic, and done phone sales).

My freeware site has assisted many users of WinTel machines, as well as folks who own or work with Akiva's WebBoard.

As far as I know, I'm the only independent "WebBoard specialist" around, although I also can handle just about any sort of "data massaging" application you might have, as well as many web-based applications, on either WinTel or Unix platforms, particularly those based on SQL.

2:  What people say about me, and references, etc.

I'm the Director of Mental Help Net, an internet resource for mental health and information.  Community, in the forms of forums and chat, form a vital and important part of our offerings.

After our recent conversion to O'Reilly's WebBoard platform, our users expressed to us their disenchanted at the loss of several valuable features of our previous forum software that had helped to make the community a special and safe place to visit, namely the ability to include emoticons (small graphics that express a mood or feeling) in front of message titles.

My research into how I might be able to add emoticons to WebBoard quickly drew me to the conclusion that O'Reilly was not going to make this easy to accomplish.  I ran into Rog at the O'Reilly tech. support forums.  For a very attractive rate, and in a time frame that astounded me (even given Rog's experience with WebBoard) he was able to provide a very workable and elegant JavaScript solution.  Rog continued to refine and tweak the JavaScript emoticon system I had commissioned from him even after we remitted payment, without expectation of additional fees.

Since we're a nonprofit subsidiary that serves people who often have substantial difficulty communicating in any environment, I'm doubly grateful to Rog for his skill and commitment, as well as the effort he put into understanding the needs of our user community.

Mark Dombeck, Ph.D.
Director, Mental Help Net

We've been the beta site for several of Rog's freeware products.

I manage a small IS department with a large arena of responsibility and resources of all varieties are scarce.  Rog's rates as well as his response time have enabled us to run several WebBoards with few problems.

We've also had him on-site for training, and he seems to have been effective both in his ability to convey information, as well as in establishing a rapport with my staff.  Although we're responsible for maintaining a large number of applications running on a variety of complex platforms, we know that if there is ever a problem with WebBoard, Rog is just a phone call or e-mail away.

As the computer officer for the University of Birmingham's School of Earth Sciences, I was initially rather disappointed with some of the administrative capabilities provided by O'Reilly's WebBoard.  Our needs require that we can easily and efficiently move students in and out of various virtual boards, as the occasion arises.  I was disinclined to access all of WebBoard's tables directly and fiddle around with scripts that may risk "breaking" the database or interfering with its integrity.

I found Rog's "batch processor" to be the answer to my prayers, and couldn't believe that he was providing it at no charge to the public.  Imagine my disappointment when I ran into an obscure problem with my version of IE5 that made it impossible for me to handle one of my critical needs.  My frustration turned to satisfaction after I wrote to Rog and found him remarkably anxious to support the product.

In the end, he solved my problem with a specialized patch, allowing me to provide the required support to my users.  I can only congratulate him for his skill as well as his dogged level of determination.  Few consultants in this business can claim to be as easy to work with, or to match his high standards of technical perfectionism.

3:  Contact information and free services

I can be reached at 765.742.6705 from approximately 9 AM to 7 PM (U.S. central time), Monday through Saturday.  This is a business line and I work from my residence, so you can feel free to call me at any time.

If you don't get an answer, you can e-mail at:
rog@NOSPAM_rs-freeware.org (obviously, the "NOSPAM_" portion is to be removed), and I'll let you know when I'm around.

I'm more than willing to "help people who try to help themselves first" on a gratis basis--time permitting.

I prefer voice contact to e-mail interactions.  In my experience, the vast majority of WebBoard questions simply lack one or two-line answers, and voice contact minimizes the likelihood of "wild goose chases" based on the sorts of misunderstandings that frequently result from e-mail.

I do make exceptions to this policy for those who are outside the continental U.S., noprofit organizations, or anyone who has a "bug report" to make concerning my freeware.

Most of the free software I can offer is already on my WebBoard Freeware Page , or my Miscellaneous Freeware Page .

If you think you'd like to ask me for a bid, please read section 5 first.

4:  My rates and client relationship philosophy (overview)

Some of the services I list below are standardized and have fixed charges.

I bill on three bases: retainer, fixed-bid, and hourly.

My "arms'-length" hourly rate is $75/hr., but I'll charge substantially less for nonprofits and/or clients who have engaged me for other services.

As a general rule, I seek to form long-term relationships with clients.  The complex nature of WebBoard, and/or the "data massaging" applications that I specialize in ... make it likely that satisfied customers will require my services at some later date.

If you think you'd like to ask me for a bid, please read section 5 first.

5:  Before you ask me for a bid regarding WebBoard or data massaging services . . .

The overwhelming majority of system administrators, project managers, department heads, and others who contact me report that they're: (a) very satisfied with my bid; (b) strongly in need of my services; and (c) unable to engage me, because their organizational rules won't permit it.

Before you ask me for a bid, please consider these factors:

I'm more than happy to discuss your projects with you on a gratis basis--time permitting--if your organization's rules make it impossible for you to compensate me for my services (see section 3).

6:  User migration to WebBoard and/or updating

If you have a group of users who need to be migrated to WebBoard and/or updated on a regular basis, you can handle this yourself with my "User DB Batch Processor" (on my freeware page).

If you don't have the time or energy to do this, I can migrate users for you by using an extract from your database or Excel file.

For less than 1,000 users, my standard fee is $250 (presuming you give me the data in the precise format that I require).  Data "cleanup" charges will vary, depending on your existing format.

This charge includes the sending of "welcome" e-mails.

My standard fee is ten cents per user over the baseline of 1,000, although I've handled as many as 37,000 (and naturally the per-user charge was substantially dropped to reflect this large volume).

If you need a system that will update your WebBoard user DB, this can also be handled with my user DB batch processor.  I can also set up a system for you that will proess regular adds and deletes, if your user DB is in a state of flux (e.g. you have "memberships" or students, etc.).

7:  Email list migration to WebBoard (overview)

If you have an existing e-mail list and you want to move it to WebBoard, there are at least two steps in the migration process.

First, you'll have to migrate the users (see previous section).

Then you'll have to initialize the conference e-mail lists.

For less than 10 lists with no more than 5000 users per list, my rate is $25/list.

If you have more lists and/or users, the rates will vary.

You can also handle this yourself with the "User DB Batch Processor" on my freeware page.

An optional third step involves "seeding" the board with the most recent posts from the e-mail list.

The rates for this will vary, depending on how much data cleanup and reformtting is needed for your existing lists' digests.

Please see the next section for a more detailed analysis.

8:  Email list migration to WebBoard (details)

If you're seriously considering moving your existing e-mail list to WebBoard, you may wish to read this section carefully.

9:  Other "populating" issues (for Universities, organizations, and Paid Subscriber Boards)

I have a number of free systems that can help organizations, Universities, and operators of Paid Subscriber Boards to "populate" (closed) boards, private conferences, and/or conference e-mail lists.

The most powerful among these is my Access Control system, at: http://www.rs-freeware.org/ac/.

Although this system and the related systems require a little thought to run, I can help you determine which system is best for your needs, and/or install it for you, and/or provide training at a very reasonable rate, depending on your needs.

10:  Leveraging WebBoard for "Enterprise" or DB-based Web Applications

You can use WebBoard's five userinfo fields to store up to (about) 10,000 bytes of information per user.

This means you can effectively "leverage" WebBoard to support (e.g.) a "shopping cart" or other enterprise application.

If you want to do this yourself, you can take a look at my userinfo system on my freeware page.  A related system called OSQL lets you extract data from the WebBoard database.  Finally, my "Full-Page Posting" system will give you the tools you need to put up complex web sites from within WebBoard: you can even maintain these sites and extract data from them from the web (i.e. without having "direct" access to the server or FTP access).

SecureWebs, Inc also can provide support for merchant account processing.

Rates for this sort of applcation will obviously vary, but the monthly costs for running it off of a single virtual board start at about $35/month.

11:  Installation and/or training for using any of my freeware systems.

All of my freeware systems are designed to be used by nontechnical people.

If you want me to install them for you on your own WebBoards, I'll charge you $75/hr. . . . plan on 1-2 hours per system, or conceivably more if you've modified many of WebBoard's standard pages.

I'll train your staff to use my software at the rate of $40/hr. by voice, or $50/hr. by real-time internet communication.  The voice rate presumes that you're willing to pay long-distance phone charges.

Return to table of contents

12:  Other customizations

I can generally do anything you'd like me to do with WebBoard, or at least give you a sense of how difficult it may be.

I normally compute the number of hours I expect to spend and multiply it by $75 for a "high" bid, and then divide it by two for a low one.

I can also give you a single number (but experience shows that clients get the best price if they're willing to let me bid a range.)

I'm not a web designer or a graphics person.

Return to table of contents

13:  WebBoard Support contracts

If you have a few virtual boards, I'll sell you a monthly support contract for $50/month, for supporting up to 3 boards (advance payment required).

In tandem with renting virtual boards, this can be an extremely inexpensive way to "get your feet wet" with WebBoard, without buying the package or allocating the money for a server, etc.

That gives you 5 free hours of support, with a $40/hr. rate beyond that (no enhancements, but minor coding "tweaks" are included).

Return to table of contents

14:  "One off" support for WebBoard applications or data massaging issues

If you need support without any development or continuing relationship, I'll try to help you for free, time permitting (see section 3).

After that, you can either pay my $75 rate on a "pro-rated" basis, or purchase a block of time for $50/hr., depending on your needs.

Return to table of contents

15:  Nonprofit organizations

I often ask considerably less from nongovernmental nonprofit organizations.

I may also be willing to install one or more of my freeware systems at no charge, and provide some free training.
